Many parents wonder at what age their children can start diving. The truth is that you don’t have to wait until they are adults to enjoy the sea from the inside: there are programs adapted for children, in total safety and under the supervision of professional instructors. If you are thinking of giving them a different experience as a gift, the diving course for children is a perfect option to awaken their curiosity for the sea and teach them to respect it from an early age.
At Dive Academy Santa Pola we have been training new divers of all ages for years, offering programs adapted to each stage. Learning to dive is possible from a very early age, always with the right approach and a safe environment such as the one offered by the Tabarca Marine Reserve.
What is the minimum age for diving?
The minimum age for diving depends on the type of activity and the depth level allowed. According to PADI standards, children can start diving from the age of 8 with programs specially designed for them, which are always performed in confined waters and with constant control by the instructor.
From the age of 10, children can access the PADI Junior Open Water Diver course, an adapted version of the standard course that allows them to dive to a depth of 12 meters with a certified adult. From the age of 12, they can extend that depth and, when they turn 15, obtain the full Open Water Diver certification as any adult.
These minimum ages are established to ensure the safety, comfort and enjoyment of children. The sessions are shorter, the equipment is lighter and the explanations are adapted to their understanding. Thus, they learn while having fun and without pressure.
What diving courses can children take?
Children have access to different PADI programs, designed according to their age and physical ability. Each one seeks to foster a love for the sea and safety from the first steps.
The first of these is the Bubblemaker, a program for 8 to 10 year olds that takes place in a pool or very calm, shallow water. It is a safe way to try out the equipment and breathe underwater for the first time. Kids have fun playing, learning to communicate with signals and controlling their breathing, all in a risk-free environment.
From the age of 10, they can access the Junior Open Water Diver, which combines simple theory, confined water exercises and several open water dives. This course leads to an official certification recognized worldwide and is the ideal step for young divers to start their underwater adventure.
When they reach the age of 12, students can advance to the Junior Advanced Open Water Diver, where they learn new techniques and expand their depth limits. In this way, the courses evolve with them, always guaranteeing safety and fun.
What does the diving baptism consist of?
Try Dives is the easiest and most exciting way to get started in this activity, both for adults and children. No previous experience or certification is required. Under the direct supervision of an instructor, participants try out the complete equipment and experience the sensation of breathing underwater.
In the case of children, Try Dives are done in shallow areas, with material adapted to their size and weight. The objective is to make them feel comfortable and enjoy the experience without stress or pressure. In addition, their confidence in the aquatic environment is reinforced, which is very beneficial for their development.
Many children who try Try Dives end up continuing their training, as the experience is both fun and educational. It is an ideal activity to do with the family, especially in places with calm waters such as Santa Pola or the island of Tabarca.
Benefits of diving for children
Scuba diving is not only a fun activity: it also brings great physical and emotional benefits for children. It helps improve coordination, concentration and lung capacity, while promoting values such as responsibility, respect for nature and teamwork.
In addition, diving promotes self-control and emotional management. Underwater, you learn to stay calm, to trust your buddy and to follow instructions precisely. All this strengthens self-esteem and personal safety.
On the educational level, diving courses for children awaken their curiosity for marine biology and environmental conservation. Many children discover their passion for the sea and become true defenders of underwater ecosystems.
Finally, diving is an experience that brings families together. Parents and children can share the excitement of their first dives and create unique memories. Practicing such a special activity together strengthens bonds and allows them to enjoy the sea in a whole new way.
