How deep can you dive? Know the legal limits

When we think of diving, the first thing that comes to mind are magical underwater landscapes, countless colorful fish and hidden caves. After this last thought, a doubt arises: how deep can you dive?

In this article we explain what the real depth limits are, both legal and physical, and tell you some surprising facts about deep diving.

Diving depth without equipment

Freediving, also called freediving, is a discipline that requires an impressive mental and physical control. In this modality, no oxygen tank is used, and the diver depends only on his or her lung capacity.

Currently, the world record for free diving is held by Austrian Herbert Nitsch, who in 2007 reached 253.2 meters (831 feet) of depth in the unlimited freediving (NLT) mode. In the case of the more common modes such as constant weight (unassisted), the record is held by William Trubridge with 127 meters (127 meters).

Recreational divers usually move between 10 and 30 meters, always with a good preparation. But for the rest of the mortals, it is advisable to stay at much more modest depths.

Maximum depth of dive with equipment

How deep can you dive with equipment? With autonomous equipment, the picture changes. Thanks to the compressed air cylinder, we can stay longer underwater and reach much greater depths. However, there are several answers to this question, depending on the diver’s level. Let’s see:

  • Basic recreational diver (Open Water): Up to 18 meters.
  • Advanced Open Water Diver (Advanced Open Water): Up to 30 meters.
  • With Deep Diver specialty: Up to 40 meters.

From there, we talk about technical diving. These divers use special gas mixtures and additional equipment to descend beyond 40 meters. The recreational technical limit is between 50 and 60 meters.

As for records, the deepest scuba diving record belongs to Ahmed Gamal Gabr, who in 2014 reached 332.35 meters deep with autonomous equipment. A real madness that required years of preparation.

What does Spanish law say about diving depths?

In Spain, recreational diving is regulated by Royal Decree 550/2020. This establishes the depth limits according to the level of certification, the type of activity and the age of the diver.

Limits according to diver’s age

The minimum age for diving activities established in Royal Decree 550/2020 is 18 years old. However, for recreational and sport diving, a minimum of 8 years is established, with the following depth limits.

  • From 8 to 10 years old: They can only do snorkeling activities or diving baptisms up to a maximum depth of 6 meters.
  • From 10 to 12 years old: Maximum 12 meters, with direct supervision of an instructor.
  • From 12 to 15 years old: Up to 21 meters.
  • Over 15 and up to 18 years of age: They can access more advanced certifications and reach depths of up to 40 meters, depending on training.

In addition, a medical check-up and a valid diving insurance are required. In Dive Academy, the best diving school in Alicante, we advise you in every step to comply with these regulations without complications.

Depth limits according to PADI

PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), the world’s most recognized certifier, also sets its own depth limits for diving:

  • PADI Scuba Diver: Up to 12 meters (40 feet), but always accompanied and under direct supervision of a PADI professional.
  • Open Water Diver: Up to 18 meters (60 feet).
  • Advanced Open Water Diver: Up to 30 meters (100 feet).
  • Deep Diver (specialty): Up to 40 meters (130 feet).

Beyond 40 meters, it is considered technical diving, and requires specific courses, experience and very rigorous safety protocols. At Dive Academy, our diving courses in Alicante follow PADI standards and we adapt each class to your level and pace.

Factors affecting safe diving depth

Although paramount, it’s not all just a matter of following the rules. Safe depth also depends on:

  • Your experience and control of air consumption.
  • Water temperature.
  • The type of gas mixture (air, nitrox, trimix).
  • Dive planning (times, decompression stops).

And, of course, respecting your own limits. Diving deep without proper preparation is always dangerous.

What is the risk of exceeding the depth limits?

Descending beyond safe limits can have serious consequences. From nitrogen narcosis (a kind of underwater drunkenness), to the dreaded decompression sickness. Both conditions can be life-threatening if proper precautions are not taken.

Therefore, when diving it is essential to always stay within your capabilities, follow the rules and train properly.
