Home tricks to avoid fogging of diving goggles

Nothing ruins an underwater tour as much as a fogged up pair of goggles. You’re underwater, all is silence, colorful fish everywhere, corals and great marine beauty… but you can’t enjoy it, because you can’t see anything. To avoid this, you need to know the best tricks to avoid fogging up your diving goggles. Some homemade, some professional, all very easy to apply.

No matter how experienced you are, if you want to improve your underwater experience, read on. These tips have been put to the test by divers of all levels. And the best part is that you only need things that you probably already have at home.

Why do the lenses of diving goggles fog up?

The answer is quite simple, because of condensation. The temperature difference between the inside of the mask and the water causes condensation. In other words, they fog up because of mist (vapor given off by the bodies depending on temperature and humidity).

This is compounded by the vapor from your own breathing and, if they are not properly cleaned, the remains of grease or silicone from the glass. In new masks, in addition, there is a microscopic manufacturing film, which aggravates the problem. That is why they should always be prepared before the first use.

Tips to avoid fogging in diving goggles

There are many, many ways to prevent your goggles from fogging up. They range from home tricks to professional solutions used by instructors on a daily basis. In general, they are remedies and techniques, easy and quick to apply, 100% effective, and best of all… they are free.

Let’s see now, one by one, these tricks to avoid fogging of the diving goggles, and that will prevent the mist to ruin your dives again in Tabarca

Toothpaste

One of the most classic and most used products. Rub some toothpaste (white, without gel or microgranules) on the inside of the crystals. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse with plenty of warm water. This removes manufacturing grease and improves the adhesion of anti-fogging products.

The potato trick

Curious but effective! Cut a thin slice of raw potato and rub it on the inside of the glass of your diving goggles. The starch creates a natural film that prevents fogging. Let dry and then rinse lightly.

Fire

This is a technique commonly used in new masks, very effective, but you have to be very careful in its application. It consists of passing the flame of a lighter through the inside of the glass of your glasses (being careful not to touch the silicone). The heat burns the manufacturing film. It must be done very carefully and never on masks with plastic lenses.

Detergent

Another home remedy to prevent fogging of glasses, very used and very effective. Apply a drop of mild liquid detergent (such as dishwashing liquid), spread it well and rinse without completely removing all the residue. Be sure to leave a light film that will prevent condensation.

Shampoo

Very similar to detergent, but gentler on the eyes. Apply a drop of baby shampoo or neutral shampoo, on the glass of the glasses, spread it, rinse a little and ready. It is a perfect option for children’s diving masks, or if you have sensitive eyes.

Saliva

Many may think it is not very hygienic, however, it is commonly used. Plus, it’s fast, convenient, and free. Spit into the mask, spread it with your finger and rinse. Although less effective than other methods, it works in many situations. The saliva creates a layer that prevents condensation.

Anti-fogging products

In today’s market, there is a wide variety of specific sprays to prevent fogging. Simply apply them to the glass and they form a protective film. They are ideal if you are looking for a professional option or if you are going to make several dives in a row. Many divers opt for this solution because of its durability.

Other options…

In addition, many brands now offer anti-fog diving goggles. Some of them are already treated with special products or with double lens technology that reduces condensation. They are a good option if you want to forget about applying tricks on every dive.

Even so, it is necessary to be careful and keep the windows clean and free of debris.

glasses with clean glass

Why is it important that my diving goggles do not fog up?

It is very important that your diving goggles do not fog up, because your visibility underwater depends on it. When your goggles fog up, a layer of vapor forms on the glass, which prevents you from seeing clearly, and this can be a big problem for several reasons:

  • Safety: Limited visibility increases the risk of not seeing obstacles, currents, or even your fellow divers, which could lead to dangerous situations.
  • Orientation: If you do not see well, you can easily become disoriented underwater, which is critical, especially in complex or low-light environments.
  • Enjoy the experience: Much of the pleasure of diving comes from observing the marine life, corals and underwater scenery. Fogged goggles completely ruin this experience.
  • Efficiency: Having to take off your goggles, clean them and put them back on underwater interrupts your dive, wastes air from your tank (if you are diving with equipment) and you may miss key moments.

In Dive Academy we are clear, knowing how to clean your goggles or diving goggles is essential for a safe, pleasant and efficient dive when diving in Tabarca.
